State Representative David Bowen, Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin
State Representative David Bowen (D) is a distinguished public servant and community leader. The son of Jamaican immigrant parents who came to Milwaukee, WI for better economic opportunity, David was born and raised on Milwaukee's North side. He was first elected to public office in 2012 to the Milwaukee County Board, becoming the board's youngest member and one of the youngest Black elected officials in Milwaukee history.
Rep. Bowen attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is a National AmeriCorps Service Alum, a two-time graduate of the AmeriCorps program Public Allies, Legacy Foundation Youth Activism Fellow and former Program Director of the non-profit Urban Underground. In August 2014, he won a 4-way primary for the Democratic nomination to serve Wisconsin's 10th Assembly District with 54% of the vote. In January 2017, David was sworn in for his second term as State Representative for the 55,000 residents of the 10th, which includes the Village of Shorewood and many great north side neighborhoods in the city of Milwaukee.
Outside the Capitol building, David serves as the 2nd highest ranking State Democrat at the Democratic Party of Wisconsin as 1st Vice Chair. In summer of 2015, soon after being elected to Party Leadership with Chair Martha Laning, he hit the ground running representing DPW at the National Young Democrats of America Convention in California. David's participation helped to found the Wisconsin Chapter of YDA that continues to do great work today engaging young Democrats all over Wisconsin.
In 2016, David was a consistent presence on the campaign trail, not just for himself but also for Bernie Sanders, Russ Feingold and the Coordinated Campaign to help elect Sec. Hillary Clinton & other Democrats up and down the ticket. Rep. Bowen was a Wisconsin Super Delegate supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders. He traveled to communities throughout Wisconsin and nationally, engaging thousands of voters. Leading up to the 2016 election, David contributed more than $10,000 to Democratic candidates and organizations, helping candidates and working for progressive values in Wisconsin. While recognizing the need to make real changes focusing on grassroots energy and truly collaborating with everyone in the party and the coordinated table, he remained a true team player placing the success of the Party first. At the DNC Winter Meeting, Rep. Bowen was elected Vice Chair of the Midwest Region of the Association of State Democratic Chairs.
This year, David is focused on supporting DPW's newly hired Regional Organizers who will be active on the ground earlier than ever, more than a year before the 2018 elections. His experience in organizing communities of color and young people on core issues will come in handy. Building our organizational structure among county Party leaders and activists all over our State for common, actionable goals and building strong relationships with allied organizations and people powered social justice movements will restore our collaborative spirit. At such a critical time to be a Democrat, David is honored to be a bold leader of integrity and help lead the Party back to its progressive roots.
